Tips for Keeping Your Fresh Cut Flowers Lasting and Healthy

1. Start with Quality Flowers:

Choose fresh flowers from a reputable source or a trusted florist. Look for flowers with sturdy stems, vibrant colors, and no signs of wilting or browning petals. This ensures that you're starting with the best possible quality flowers.

2. Cut Stems at an Angle:

Before placing your flowers in a vase, trim the stems at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption, allowing the flowers to take in more hydration and nutrients.

3. Use Clean Vases:

Cleanliness is crucial when it comes to flower care. Wash your vases with warm, soapy water and rinse them thoroughly before using them. Bacteria and residue from previous arrangements can shorten the lifespan of your fresh cut flowers.

4. Remove Excess Foliage:

Remove any leaves or foliage that will be submerged in water. This prevents bacterial growth and keeps the water clean. Only the stems should be in contact with the water in the vase.

5. Water:

Change the water every two to three days, or whenever it becomes cloudy. Recut the stems each time you change the water to maintain optimal water absorption.

6. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat:

Place your flower arrangement in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat sources. Exposure to excessive heat or direct sunlight can cause the flowers to wilt faster.

7. Avoid Fruit and Flower Arrangement Proximity:

Keep your flower arrangement away from ripening fruits. Fruits release ethylene gas, which can accelerate the aging process of flowers and cause them to wilt prematurely.

8. Consider Flower Compatibility:

When arranging multiple types of flowers together, consider their compatibility. Some flowers release substances that can be harmful to others. Research or consult a florist to ensure that your flower combinations are compatible.

9. Remove Faded Flowers:

As individual flowers start to fade, remove them from the arrangement. This prevents the spread of bacteria and allows the remaining flowers to thrive.

10: Give them a Fresh Cut:

If your flowers don't come in a vase or a water wrap, always give them a fresh cut before putting them in water. If you find them struggling days after you've had them in water, sometimes a fresh cut is just what they need!
